Durability of Gerber Saddles in RC Bridges: Analyses and Applications (Musmeci Bridge, Italy)

Guaranteeing adequate safety levels in critical infrastructures such as bridges is essential to modern societies and their vital services. Bridges with reinforced concrete structures are subject deterioration, especially due corrosion effects. Gerber saddles among the key components of which exposed environmental actions position reduced possibility inspection. In this paper, a framework for durability analysis these proposed, considering simultaneous presence permanent loads under form chloride ions. Nonlinear numerical simulations adopting finite element code ATENA performed, accounting ingress analyses. The cracks (due applied and/or design/construction defects) may speed-up propagation, steel reinforcement loss, cracking spalling, effects on load-bearing capacity considered. This has been prominent (RC) bridge, namely Musmeci bridge Potenza, Italy. Durability analyses made it possible evaluate saddles’ strength (i) at time construction, (ii) after forty-five years since (iii) an extended fifty years. results show that can influence both ultimate load collapse mechanism.
